Martin Kaymer Wins the 2014 US Open

It may have been clear from a few days ago, but Martin Kaymer has won the 2014 US Open at Pinehurst No. 2, by an astonishing 8 shots over Rickie Fowler and Erik Compton. This is Kaymer's second win of the year, the first being his win at the high-profile Players Championship in May. He closed the tournament with a respectable 1-under 69. It was really his tournament to win and his performance this week was reminiscent to that of Rory McIlroy's US Open win at Congressional in 2011.

What's even more amazing is that these three players were the only players to finish under par at the tournament, as conditions at Pinehurst No. 2 toughened as the week progressed.

With his win, Martin Kaymer becomes the second Major Champion from Germany, after Bernhard Langer. In his interview at the closing ceremony for the tournament, Kaymer happily noted that with their Major wins, he and Langer have almost completed the "German Gran Slam" (Lagner winning the Masters twice, and Kaymer winning the PGA Championship).

With Kaymer's play so far this year, it wouldn't be surprising if he came close to or even regained his place atop the World Golf Rankings. We'll just have to wait and see.
